Syringe Service & Disposal Program:

Since 2018 Needlepoint Sanctuary has operated a Syringe Service and Disposal Program ( SSP). Historically we have operated a mobile exchange program in Bangor, Maine that prioritizes services towards the unhoused community in the greater Bangor area. Starting in 2025, we have shifted to operating a combination of mobile and brick-and-mortar syringe service programming.

A Syringe Service and Disposal Program is a program designed to minimize the health risks associated with injection drug use and other forms of substance use. The Syringe Service Program model encompasses syringe distribution and disposal, overdose prevention, STD prevention, and much more. Syringe Service Programs are a fundamental form of public health intervention that reduces the risks associated with substance use such as infection and overdose. We also provide rapid testing for hepatitis, HIV, and partner with local organizations to provide wound care and other needed services.

If you need to access our syringe services program, we encourage you to give us a call at: 207-307-7588. At this time we are only able to offer syringes at our mobile outreach location, located by the Hope House in Bangor. If you need testing, or supplies other than syringes, you can give us a call and set up an appointment to receive services. For a complete listing of all syringe service programs in the state please visit the Maine CDC website.
